FILL Your SELF (House) with Godly Things! - Matthew 12 Blog
Today I read in Matthew 12 during my Time Alone With God and one powerful section of scripture stood out to me. “When an impure spirit comes out of a person, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it. Then it says, ‘I will return to the house I left.’ When it arrives, it finds the house unoccupied, swept clean and put in order. Then it goes and takes with it seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. And the final condition of that person is worse than the first.” (Matthew 12:43-45a NIV). This section of scripture is going to cause me to have to go far deeper than I even care to go, but, Lord Help Me PLEASE, and let’s do this.
First of all, many people tend to think of some crazy exorcism when they think of an impure spirit coming out of a person, and to be honest, that big scene is rarely the case when an impure spirit is coming out. People can be possessed by and impure spirit, or oppressed by an impure spirit, and there are a lot of different types of spirits out there too. I believe (not saying I’m 100% right) that a Christian is the possession of Christ and thus can’t be possessed by an impure spirit. However, a Christian can be oppressed by an impure spirit. I could write a whole blog on that alone, but that is not really the subject that I am trying to tackle in this blog.
All of that being said, you will rarely notice if a person has an impure spirit in them or attached to them and a lot of people around you probably do. These spirits will often attach themselves to a person through sin as sin is one way to open the door to these spirits. These spirits can come out of people through those powerful exorcisms, prayer and fasting, simple deliverance, denying the fleshly desires (sin) and a handful of other ways. When the spirits come out, the person (house) is “empty and swept clean” as the scripture above says. However, if the person doesn’t fill themselves (the house) with the presence of the Holy Spirit, then that spirit is likely to come back and bring more with it too (leaving the person in a worse condition then they were before).
Now to look at this in a different way. If you have been struggling with a sin for a long period of time, there is a good chance that a spirit is attached to that and is causing you to be even more addicted to that sin. One way to sort of take matters into your own hands with that sin is to really begin to pray and fast over that sin. Ask God to give you the strength to be victorious over that sin and take it one victorious day at a time in Jesus name. Fasting is powerful because it is denying your flesh of food and making you more reliant on God to feed you all that you need through prayer and reading His Word. On top of that, you are denying yourself of the sin that your flesh desires. So, all in all, you are making your flesh weak, which allows the Spirit of God within you to become stronger and overpower the flesh and thus push out the impure Spirit.
Now that you’ve been able to push out the impure spirit, you need to make sure that you continue to fill/strengthen your self (house) with the presence of the Holy Spirit. I’d suggest strengthening the Holy Spirit within you in all of the following ways: reading (studying) the Bible daily, spending a good amount of time in prayer daily, listen to worship music as often as possible, get heavily plugged in to church and bible studies, and surround yourself with good Christian accountability partners and mentors. All of this things should not only help the Holy Spirit to grow within you, but should also help to keep you from falling back into that sin again.
I pray that this blog wasn’t too over the top, but rather was encouraging to you in your walk with Christ. Reality is, the devil and his impure spirits are real, but both Jesus Christ and the weapons He gives us to fight with are far stronger than the enemy. I hope you invest your time and efforts into the suggestions I gave in this blog as the Holy Spirit within you wants to grow and thrive. Never forget this powerful scripture, “I can do ALL things through Christ who gives me strength.” (Phil 4:13). Allow Him to give you strength and break free from any and all of the sin that the enemy is trying to entangle you in each day. You’ve got this Champ!!!
